|
The World Champs were held in Klagenfurt,
Austria from the 1st - 5th August 2001.Australia had a number of mens and womens teams flying the flag.
Zahner-Prosser
were feeling positive after a first place in Men's Germany Open at
Berlin in late June. They came to this event with 15th seed. Slack
and Novosel were right on their heals with a 17th seeding. Both teams
won their pools to advance to the next round of sudden death elimination.
In
their first round match Zahner and Prosser defeated the German pairing
in straight sets. Slack and Novosel weren't as lucky going down to
the USA paring of McCaw-Heidger in straight sets 21/19, 21/19.
Prosser and Zahner faced the Brazilians Emanuel-Tande in their second round sudden death. After a strong fight back in the second set the boys went down in two 17-21, 20-22. Final standings for the fellas was 9th for Jules and Lee and 17th for Slack and Novosel.
The girls line up was Cook-Pottharst (4th seed) and Gerlic-Clarke (19th seed wild card entry). Both teams managed a ninth place. A great result for Gerlic - Clarke but a very disappointing finish for the Olympic gold medallists.
Overall it wasn't a great campagin for the Aussies, but with the Goodwill
Games in Brissie next month, their sure to fair better on home soil.
For the record the men's placing's for the event saw Baracetti-Conde of Argentina take the gold and US$47.000,00. Ricardo-Loiola of Brazil second and Kjemperud-Hoidalen of Norway with the bronze and a cool US$21.000,00.
The Ladies event was dominated by the Brazilians with Adriana Behar-Shelda on the top podium, Sandra Pires-Minello second and the Checks Celbova-Dosoudilova third.
